The exciting world of remote sensing imagery

The desire to envision the world from above is as old as mapmaking itself; but for two and a half millennia, mankind required the imagination of artists (the most famous among them may be Leonardo da Vinci) to “see” their landscape from a bird’s eye view. All this changed when about 150 years ago, the french photographer Gaspard-Félix Tournachon, better known as Nadar, took his camera up in a balloon and began taking the first aerial photos - not for fun or for their artistic value: He surveyed the frontline in the Battle of Solverino, and thus not only invented aerial photography, but opened up the wide field of remote sensing with his images. In the following decades, the invention of airplanes, combined with lighter and faster cameras, took aerial imagery to ever greater heights - and in August 1959, NASA’s Explorer 6 sent back the first images taken from an earth-orbiting satellite.

Today, more than 300 Earth Observation (EO) satellites are in orbit, collecting images and data for governments, the military, and industry. Satellites monitor weather and ocean currents, vegetation cycles and land use; a wide range of image systems - optical, infrared, SAR, LIDAR - on satellites, aircraft and Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) offer a host of databases for official use, science, and commercial applications.

Save costs with Data as a Service on CloudEO

On the CloudEO GeoMarketplace, you can request and retrieve single images from multiple world-leading vendors of imagery; request the tasking of new data, or subscribe to imagery services which help you monitor specific areas. Use the data on the CloudEO Workbench or our hosted server environment and save costs with Data as a Service (DaaS). You can use the data with temporary licences and only pay for the time of usage and easily fuse commercial and free data, benefit from readily installed software and latest computing technology.

If you are developing new applications, contact us and apply for a development center. We are dedicated to helping you and working together with the imagery providers to ensure attractive pricing and easy access.
